We’re essentially through a quarter of the NFL season after week 4. Let’s analyze some of the biggest stories from this year so far:

CHIEFS FINDING THEIR FOOTING
The Kansas City Chiefs had a rough start to this season. They opened the year with two straight losses. One to their division rival Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil and another at home against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles. The KC offense was the biggest concern. They averaged just under twenty points a game in the first two weeks after speedy receiver Xavier Worthy was injured in game one. Many fans felt this was the beginning of the end for the Chiefs dynasty.
KC picked up their first win of the season against a lowly New York Giants team in week 3. Their offense still did not look very impressive. But the Chiefs needed to get a win regardless of how it looked. There were a few big plays throughout the game that proved that some semblance of the old Kansas City still existed and that came to roost in week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens. The team finally looked alive and scored more than thirty-five points for the first time since September of 2023.
The outlook for the Chiefs’ season drastically changed after their 0-2 start. Heading into week 5, Kansas City sits just one game behind the Chargers for the division lead. Fans are hoping the offense continues to improve as they await the return of suspended receiver Rashee Rice.

RAVENS DIGGING THEMSELVES A HOLE
The Baltimore Ravens opened the season with just one win through four games. The good news for Ravens fans is that quarterback Lamar Jackson has looked stellar this year. Jackson has completed more than seventy percent of his passes and has thrown for ten touchdowns with just one interception on the season. But Ravens fans’ concern lies with the team’s defensive woes. Baltimore has given up an average of more than thirty-three points per game so far.
In all fairness, all three of the Ravens’ losses came against what are considered top tier opponents in the Buffalo Bills, the Detroit Lions, and the Chiefs. But the losses themselves are not as concerning as the methods in which the losses came. In their first game against the Bills, a Derrick Henry fumble led to Baltimore blowing a 15-point lead on their way to losing on a last second game winning field goal. After picking up a win in week 2, Baltimore was violently pushed around by Detroit and Kansas City which has left fans worried that the team’s tough identity is no longer present. Adding to their mountain of problems, Jackson suffered a hamstring injury against the Chiefs and will miss the team’s next two games.
Baltimore needs to quickly improve defensively if they hope to at least make the playoffs this year, let alone win the division.

COLTS STRONG START
The Indianapolis Colts have shocked the league this season. They jumped out of the gates with a 3-0 record before suffering their first loss in week 4 to the Los Angeles Rams. Quarterback Daniel Jones’ improvement as a player is at the forefront of the Colts’ strong start. Jones is completing seventy percent of his passes and averaging almost two-hundred and seventy passing yards per game.
Head coach Shane Steichen has essentially saved his job by developing Jones into a high-level quarterback. The Colts always had a talented roster but have suffered through mediocre-to-bad quarterback play over the past decade. Now, Indianapolis is poised for a successful season with a competent quarterback and strong receiving/rushing weapons.
Time will tell if Jones can continue to play at such a high level for the entire season. But Indianapolis’ supporting cast along with Steichen’s proven developmental skills certainly sets things up for success.

COWBOYS BETTER THAN EXPECTED
The Dallas Cowboys have been a surprise a quarter into the year. America’s team sits at an awkward 1-2-1 record after tying with the Green Bay Packers in week 4. They looked strong against Green Bay despite many fans predicting a total blowout. The cowboys scored 40 points without their star receiver CeeDee Lamb. Quarterback Dak Prescott added three passing touchdowns to his already impressive season. The Packers game was crucial since this offseason the two teams exchanged players in a blockbuster trade that saw All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons leave the Cowboys. The outcome was a microcosm of Dallas’ season so far.
Dallas was expected to have a mediocre-to-poor year. The organization’s biggest concern was the defense and so far they’ve been vindicated. The Cowboys are ranked second last in scoring defense, giving up thirty-three points per game. Dallas’ saving grace is that they have the best offense in the league in terms of total yards per game. Their record shows that no matter how prolific a team’s offense is, poor defense is incredibly difficult to overcome.
Cowboys fans are still thinking positively about the team for now. Prescott has had an incredible season. But he’ll have to continue to totally carry the team as the defense has shown no sign of improvement.

BAKER’S EARLY MVP PUSH
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield had an incredible first quarter of the regular season. Baker has thrown for more than nine-hundred yards with a total of eight touchdowns and just one interception through four games. He’s really taken on the role of the undisputed leader of this team, and he’s led them to an impressive 3-1 record.
Mayfield’s most impressive feat is that the team’s three wins were orchestrated by three-straight game winning drives to open the year. Baker and rookie wide-receiver Emeka Egbuka have immediately built a rapport. Egbuka is averaging over seventy yards per game this season.
Baker and the Buccaneers are poised to take total control of the NFC South division backed by his early MVP push.

RUSSELL WILSON’S CAREER IS LIKELY OVER
Russell Wilson was benched by the New York Giants after week 3 of the 2025 season. It wasn’t surprising that Wilson was benched, but it was surprising how quickly it happened.
The Giants selected quarterback Jaxson Dart late in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, so it was reasonable to assume that Dart would be starting at some point this season. But after the Giants started 0-3 and Wilson looked unimpressive, the team made the switch to the rookie QB in hopes of saving their season and exciting the fanbase. The Giants got their first win in week 4 with Dart starting, making things look even worse for Wilson.
Many experts believe this is the end of Wilson’s career. Wilson has been on four teams in the past five years. Unless a team in need of a QB due to injury trades for him, it’s likely we’ve seen a tumultuous end to a possible hall of fame career.
Thank you for reading.
